The call it the finals for a reason!!
The 2008 European Monster Truck Racing Championship came to a close at Santa Pod Raceway on Sunday. The event was billed as the finals, and the finals it was, with just two trucks in contention for the series win. Santa Pod’s own truck Podzilla with driver Drew Thornton at the wheel and three time EMTRC Champions BIGFFOT® #17 and Nigel Morris.
These trucks have had diametrically opposed seasons with Podzilla being the height of consistency scoring good points at every round, and BIGFOOT® #17 winning every round that it completed but with two DNF’s costing serious points.
The Santa Pod event team introduced a new scoring format, with each truck racing each other and accruing points based on position. Also new was the track format that can best be described as a lolly pop format with just on set of cars in each lane that are taken from both directions.
Once again it was Nigel Morris in the BIGFOOT® truck that set the standard for qualifying times being the only driver to get below 20 seconds for the course on a single run with a 19:18 time gaining the extra points.
When the points were tallied for the racing heats the event winner was BIGFOOT® but he failed to get enough points between himself and Poadzilla driver Drew Thornton to stop the new truck and driver combo from lifting the much converted EMTRC title in their first year.
The entire EMTRC team would like to send their sincere congratulations to both Drew and the Santa Pod team for their success with the new Podzilla truck. Lets hope that both Drew and Podzilla are back to defend their title in 2009…
