Looked like it would be wet, but looks can be deceiving!!
Round two of the 2008 EMTRC series arrived at the Hop Farm in Paddock Wood, Kent to find brilliant sunshine after a week of rain!
With five of the best monster trucks available in the UK in attendance to mood was high, and expectation was huge with the long awaited match up between Karl swallow in his Slingshot truck and current title holder Nigel Morris in BIGFOOT®#17.
New to this year’s series were Glen Wise in Extreme, Graham Smith in an all-new Supercharger, and Drew Thornton returns to driving in the EMTRC with new truck Podzilla.
The ramps seemed to be catching everyone out in the qualifying runs, with some quite dramatic front end landings, one in particular from Karl in Slingshot almost endo’ing the truck. Fastest time was set by Nigel in BIGFOOT®#17 on his first run, which was lucky as BIGFOOT®#17 blew out a planetary hub on his second run. The team would have to thrash against the clock to get the truck fixed for racing.
With help from the entire paddock, BIGFOOT®#17 was fixed and ready for racing. During racing some more scary front end landings from all the drivers had questions being asked about the ramps. But the ramps have been the same for three years so it’s down to it being the first time for all this year over the steel ramps.
The final came down to Slingshot vs BIGFOOT®#17.
It was a tight and tense race with both trucks taking their time to stage into the timing beams. Most observers say that Slingshot got the jump at the start, and the reaction times confirmed this. In fact it was neck and neck into the turn, where amazingly both trucks had over steered into trouble. So it was all down to a race for the finish line, and it was BIGFOOT®#17 that recovered the best to take the win.
